As the city fades behind you, the road becomes quieter and eventually turns into a dirt path, guiding you toward the ancient capital of the Chenla Kingdom, which thrived between the 5th and 7th centuries.

The first stop is Sambor Prei Kuk, an incredible archaeological site built by King Isanavarman I and dedicated to the god Shiva. Hidden beneath a canopy of trees, more than a hundred brick temples still stand. Each structure has its own unique story, but two really stand out Prasat Yeay Peau, wrapped in myth and legend, and Prasat Tao, with its proud stone lions guarding the entrance just as they did centuries ago.

The journey continues to Kuh Nokor Temple, dating from the 10th to 11th century under King Suryavarman I. Built from laterite and restored during the French colonial era, this temple features a central sanctuary decorated with a detailed sandstone lintel that shows Indra riding his three-headed elephant, Airavata an impressive example of ancient Khmer craftsmanship.

Before returning to Phnom Penh, you’ll stop at the lively Skun Market, famously known as the “Spider Market.” Here, vendors display trays of crispy fried tarantulas, scorpions, and grasshoppers, offering travelers a glimpse into Cambodia’s bold and surprising street food culture.
